Art in the Dark was created more than ten years ago to develop and market phosphorescent art. Unique in it's concept, it has created a new medium and with it, a new technology It is the products of this technology that will take us into the next millennium, lighting the darkness in a new and exciting way. David Ray, an artist and the company's founder first became fascinated with the Glow while watching the phosphorescence of the waves as they broke on a tropical shoreline. Returning to Europe, the image never left him. Determined to re-create that explosion of cool light there followed years of experimentation and research, both here and in America before 'The Glow was refined and Art in the Dark was born. The actual history of 'glow in the dark' goes back to the dawn of time. Early man was both fascinated and terrified by nature's display of natural phosphorescents. Cold light that radiated from rotting tree trunks or rocks that glowed like burning embers. It was not until the 1600's that the first attempts were made to synthesize the effect. The real breakthrough came in the 19th century when the phenomenon was finally understood. In today's world there are many applications of the 'glow' technology. However, Art in the Dark has taken that technology into a new and exciting field. The concept of 'The Glo' in itself is fascinating. Based on quantum physics it turns short wave energy into longwave light. So, when exposed to just a few seconds of full spectrum light (or energy), it turns that exposure into half an hour of light and be visible (to the dark adapted eye) for up to eight hours. The effect can be reactivated again and again. 'The Glo' is certified non-toxic by US and EEC regulations. That non-toxicity gives it numerous 'people friendly' applications such as clothing, children's books and toys. 'The Glo' exists in a number of colors all of which are certified non- toxic and Art in the Dark has them all. Art in the Dark has also successfully developed a number of different applications of 'The Glo' ranging from acrylic lacquers and gel coats to silkscreen and printing inks. There also exists applications in vinyl and injected plastic products.
