Founded in 1991, Signature Theatre celebrates playwrights and gives them an artistic home, producing a body of work by each resident writer and a season of six to eight productions annually. In 2005, Signature began its groundbreaking Signature Ticket Initiative, providing affordable tickets to every production. In 2012, Signature opened the Pershing Square Signature Center, the Frank Gehry-designed 75,000 square foot Center featuring three theatres, two rehearsal studios, a central, public lobby with a café and bookstore, and administrative offices. In 2014, Signature became the first New York City theatre to receive the Regional Theatre Tony Award®.
Atlantic Theater Company is dedicated to producing great plays simply and truthfully while using an artistic ensemble. Our company was founded in 1985 by students of David Mamet and William H. Macy and since then, grown into a preeminent theater recognized internationally for excellence. This reputation is the result of the consistent quality and ambitious scope of our work, which includes world and NYC premieres, modern adaptations of classic plays, and international co-productions. We also cultivate writers at all stages of their careers through new play development activities like readings, workshops, commissions, and premiere productions at Stage 2.
The acting ensemble that created the company – which includes some of America’s finest theater artists – remains an integral part of Atlantic. Since our inception, Atlantic has produced more than 150 plays, including Tony Award-winning productions of Spring Awakening and The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Among our many awards, we’ve been honored with 12 Tonys as well as the Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Awards for “Outstanding Body of Work.”
In addition to our work onstage, Atlantic is one of the most respected theater schools in NYC. Today, the Atlantic Acting School consists of a rigorous conservatory program, an undergraduate program operated in conjunction with NYU, and afterschool and summer programs for kids and teens. We also serve about 3,500 NYC public school students each year through our arts education programming.
