The three Monteverdi ensembles – the Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique – are a leading force on the international music scene. World-class musicians and singers from many nationalities come together to bring fresh perspectives, immediacy and drama to performances around the world in ground-breaking, historically informed projects that span eight centuries of musical masterpieces. From the monumental to the intimate, from sacred music to opera, from early music to the 20th century, often in unexpected combinations, the company strives for excellence in each of its projects. Possessed of an instantly recognisable core sound, the three ensembles are in constant renewal and evolution. Alongside the core performances, the company is committed to providing additional opportunities for professional development and education through complementary projects and mentoring. In furtherance of these objectives the company engages international singers and instrumentalists, assistant conductors, artists, performers and répétiteurs; additionally, the company engages skilled professional and technical advisers such as librarians, stage managers, production managers, language and vocal coaches, musicologists, yoga practitioners, keyboard technicians and lighting and costume designers. Comprising both choir and period-instrument orchestra, The Sixteen’s total commitment to the music it performs is its greatest distinction. A special reputation for performing early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance, bringing fresh insights into Baroque and early Classical music and a diversity of 20th-century music, is drawn from the passions of conductor and founder Harry Christophers.
