ArkDes Information

ArkDes is a museum in Stockholm and part of the Moderna Museet government agency. ArkDes is active throughout Sweden and exists to foster and develop the role of architecture and design in society. ArkDes is tasked by the government to monitor and support the national architecture and design policy goals outlined in the Policy for Designed Living Environment. This policy pertains to the planning and design of our cities, villages, and public spaces, and how these elements impact our everyday life and well-being. As an agency, we conduct practice-based research projects across the country aimed at making a difference to our shared living environments. ArkDes offers exhibitions, installations, lectures, creative workshops, and discussions dedicated to architecture and design. Situated on Skeppsholmen in Stockholm, the museum cares for a collection of Swedish architecture consisting of four million objects dating from the 1850s onwards. ArkDes’s task, combining museum operations and policy mandate, creates a unique kind of institution with opportunity to intertwine knowledge of Swedish architectural history with contemporary design processes that actively contribute to shaping sustainable societies.
