We are approaching the age of artificial intelligence. One in which the mental capacity, and rationality of machines will match and potentially surpass that of humanity. The various developmental paths AI may take raises many ethical and philosophical questions. The magnitude of AI’s potential impact on humanity means that these questions are some of the most important we are facing right now. We found it necessary therefore to create a collective of academics and students which will explore these questions within formal discussion groups. We will consider the philosophical and ethical implications of AI raised through philosophical inquiry and empirical evidence from multiple disciplines. This will occur in bi-weekly meetings, moderated by Professor Scharp, the director of St Andrews Arché philosophical research department. Parallel groups comprised of students and professors have been set up in some of the worlds top Universities, such as MIT, Harvard and Cambridge.
