The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), in Washington, DC, is the largest membership organization of professional social workers. It promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers. NASW also seeks to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, and communities through its advocacy.

The Australian Association of Social Workers is the professional representative body of social workers in Australia, with more than 17,000 members. It was formed as a national association in 1946 and has since supported its members through the profession's many developments and changes. On behalf of the Australian Government, the AASW also accredits Mental Health Social Workers for eligibility for the Medicare Provider Number and assesses social work qualifications for migration purposes.
