Applied Medical Software, Inc. (AMS) has developed the AMS Performance Based Incentive System™ (AMS PBIS™). The patented AMS PBIS™ has two basic components: 1. a system of performance measurement that evaluates individual physician inpatient resource utilization; and, 2. an incentive system that recognizes the performance of efficient physicians, and encourages inefficient physicians to improve their performance by reducing medically unnecessary inpatient resource utilization. Both components are adjusted for case-mix and severity of illness. The AMS PBIS™ provides the "gain sharing" methodology for 13 of the 14 Medicare gainsharing demonstration sites recently approved by Medicare. Also, the AMS PBIS™ has been adapted for use with commercial patients. The program provides the framework for collaboration by aligning the incentives of the hospital, physicians and payer.
