Lets start with a little bit of history. In late 2006, Cornel Heydenrych was about to return back to her old job after 12 months of maternity leave. She knew that once back at work at the software company she worked for the past couple of years, she would be back to a hectic travelling schedule flying out of Toronto on Mondays and often only returning back home late on Fridays. She knew that she would see preciously little of baby Jacob at a time when he would need her most. Cornel knew that it was impossible for her to return back to work. It was around that time when Cornel was looking at alternatives to balance her demands as a parent versus her career that the idea of Ape to Zebra was formed. Ape to Zebra would be an online retailer of safe, high quality environmentally friendly toys for children aged between zero and five. It would not sell the cheap, violent toys that are found in most toy shops. Instead Ape to Zebra would carefully select toys for their safety, their ability to (in the hands of loving parents and caregivers) to inspire and grow young minds to reach their full potential. Ape to Zebra’s beginnings were humble. The business was started from Cornel’s living room with a few toys stacked on shelves with the internet site launched in early 2007.
