AlmereGrid is a computer grid in the city of Almere. Citizins donate their unused computing time by simply installing software on their computer (a grid client) and leaving the computer switched on all the time. All the citizen's computing time together add up to form a considerable supercomputer that science can use. Thus AlmereGrid enables citizens to contribute to major science programmes. Building on the specific pioneering qualities of a new town built on the bottom of the former sea: “Zuiderzee”, AlmereGrid is the first CityGrid in the world. After half a decade, AlmereGrid is internationally recognized for its pioneering efforts, and has been and still is, a major partner in several European Research & Development projects. AlmereGrid’s main mission is to enable citizens to support science, but it also supports scientific experiments in Grid and Cloud computing that need a distributed computing test bed. To realize its vision, AlmereGrid works with partner organisations, that bring expert knowledge or facilities. Partner organisations get acknowledgements for helping citizens to give science a helping hand. Partners also acquire deep technical knowledge about operating and requirements of complex distributed Grid and Cloud based infrastructures.
