The Boston Symphony Orchestra gave its inaugural concert in 1881, realizing the dream of its founder, the Civil War veteran/businessman/philanthropist Henry Lee Higginson, who envisioned a great and permanent orchestra in his hometown of Boston. Today the BSO and Boston Pops reach millions of listeners through not only their concert performances in Boston and at Tanglewood, but also via digital programs on BSO NOW, radio, television, educational programs, recordings, and tours.
The Montalbán’s rooftop – outfitted with a bar, concession stand and full kitchen – provides an open-air movie theater complete with a large projection screen, state-of-the-art projector, noise cancelling headphones, fresh-popped popcorn and even blankets for a chilly night.
We also feature our iconic 1000 seat main stage "Broadway Style" intimate indoor theatre experience along with our MEZZ Gallery where we host VIP Meet and Greet and post show parties.
This year – 2019 – the historic venue celebrates 10 years of rooftop entertainment and enters its fifth year of its ongoing outdoor movie series, now entitled Rooftop Movies at The Montalbán. The Montalbán curates films from all eras including Hollywood classics, cult favorites, select current releases, premieres and special presentations with cast and crew when possible.
Doors open at 6:00pm, which allows attendees to DRINK beer, wine, mix drinks and the ever-popular hand-crafted Ramos Sangria; DINE thanx to Umami Burger who continues as the venue’s rooftop culinary partner (serving Impossible Burgers much to the delight of many vegetarians); PLAY a game of giant Jenga or ham-it-up in the selfie-friendly Simple Booth area; or CHILL in a relaxing beach chair or loveseat while listening to a hand-selected musical soundtrack in noise-cancelling headphones until the movie begins.
