The Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society (AAMS) is a not-for-profit organization that provides education and information to Albertans on how to solve disputes more efficiently and more cost-effectively than going to court. As a federally regulated charity, we exist for the general good of the public and for disseminating important information on alternative ways to resolve conflict. We also conduct research on the latest developments and improvements to mediation and arbitration and develop means to convey this information to Albertans. AAMS believes that for arbitration and mediation to be successful it is necessary for parties who might use these alternatives to have access to the services and information we provide, gaining a better understanding of the processes and benefits available to them. This may include (but not be limited to) having information on where and to access dispute resolution professionals, lists of practicing arbitrators and mediators in Alberta and their respective expertise, comprehensive explanations about arbitration, mediation and other forms of dispute resolution, connections to other ADR organizations offering more specific services, and assisting those who cannot take advantage of the many dispute resolution services available. As a charity, AAMS is completely dependent upon public funding, private donations, fundraising and volunteers. There are up to 9 AAMS Volunteer Board members and one part-time Executive Director. In addition to offering public education and conducting research, AAMS can fund other charitable organizations or individuals in need, if this assistance is consistent with the AAMS mandate. AAMS can also hire other organizations or individuals to carry out some of its objectives if AAMS itself does not have sufficient time or manpower. AAMS was incorporated as a non-profit organization in April, 1982 under the Societies Act of Alberta. In 2012 AAMS broke into two separate organizations: The ADR Institute of Alberta (ADRIA), which deals with education and training of ADR professionals and is the member organization for practicing professionals, and AAMS the federally registered charity. As a charity, AAMS is here:1.To promote, inform, publicize, communicate and improve the knowledge, application and techniques of arbitration and mediation procedures in the settlement of disputes.
