Islamic Relief is a faith-based relief and development agency working to save and transform the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
Established in 1984, we now work in over 45 countries assisting individuals, families and communities through emergency response and development projects that typically help over 10 million people each year.
The global Islamic Relief family includes national offices, affiliated partners and field offices. We also own a subsidiary company which raises funds for our work by recycling clothing.
Our work
Our projects provide poor people with access to vital services. We tackle the root causes of poverty. We protect communities from disasters, and deliver life-saving emergency aid. We also provide lasting routes out of poverty, and empower vulnerable people to transform their lives and their communities.
Islamic Relief is also a policy leader on Islamic humanitarianism, and our research programmes develop distinctive, practical approaches to the key issues that are affecting our world today.
Our mission
Islamic Relief envisages a caring world where communities are empowered, social obligations are fulfilled and people respond as one to the suffering of others.

"Whoever saved a life, it would be as if they saved the life of all mankind." (Qur'an 5:32)
Islamic Relief is an international non-governmental organisation (INGO) founded in the UK in 1984 by a group of medical doctors and activists.
Since 1984 we have saved and transformed the lives of over 117 million people. By responding to disasters, rebuilding lives and preparing people in case disaster strikes – we save lives before they are lost.
In addition to providing disaster and emergency response, we also promote sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities – regardless of race, religion or gender.
Our Mission:
Together we will inspire and enable people to respond rapidly to disasters and fight poverty through our Islamic values, expertise and global reach.
Our Values:
We remain guided by the timeless values and teachings of the Qur’an and the prophetic example (Sunnah), most specifically:
- Sincerity (Ikhlas) – In responding to poverty and suffering, our efforts are driven by sincerity to God and the need to fulfil our obligations to humanity.
- Excellence (Ihsan) – Our actions in tackling poverty are marked by excellence in our operations and the conduct through which we help the deserving people we serve.
- Compassion (Rahma) – We believe the protection and well-being of every life is of paramount importance and we shall join with other humanitarian actors to act as one in responding to suffering brought on by disasters, poverty and injustice.
- Social Justice (Adl) – Our work is founded on enabling people and institutions to fulfil the rights of the poor and vulnerable. We work to empower the dispossessed towards realising their God-given human potential and develop their capabilities and resources.
- Custodianship (Amana) – We uphold our duty of custodianship over Earth and its resources, and the trust people place in us as a humanitarian and development practitioner to be transparent and accountable.
ICNA Relief works to build healthy communities, strengthen families and create opportunities for those in despair while maintaining their dignity and advocating for their basic human needs.
