A visit to the Airborne Museum is a unique experience. The splendidly renovated and modernized building houses the world’s largest collection of militaria from Operation Market Garden. The Netherlands’ only battlefield museum allows you to see and feel what the war was really like. The villa was the Allied headquarters during the Battle of Arnhem. It has 1,700 m2 of exhibition space and a 900 m2 underground simulation area, where you can feel what it was like to be right in the middle of the battle. If the Airborne Museum has anything to say, it’s that freedom should never be taken for granted and that we experience freedom together. It also shows that reconciliation is possible. There is also a lot to see in the immediate vicinity of the museum. Don’t miss the Airborne Cemetery. Then there’s the obelisk, on which a man representing Liberty is surrounded by soldiers and civilians. And there’s the bronze statue by artist Jits Bakker, who lived through the battle as a boy. This work (‘The Guardian’) in the park near the Airborne Museum represents an angel who accompanies Man to heaven, gives hope and offers protection with its wings.
