Prisons across Africa are overcrowded and under-resourced. Operating within 30 prisons across Kenya and Uganda, the African Prisons Project brings justice, dignity and hope to the men, women and children living and working behind bars across Africa. How? By placing the power of the law in the hands of the poor. Many have limited access to justice and education. In partnership with the University of London’s International Programme, prisoners and prison staff have been supported to study for a Law degree; 63 to date. The same students provide paralegal services to fellow inmates. In 2015-2016, 2,371 prisoners were supported by these services. On average, 10 prisoners are released every 48 hours thanks to APP Justice Changemakers. Men and women have trained to succeed in overturning their own and others’ death sentences. As APP grows, so does the increase in demand for access to justice. In 2018, we plan to expand the number of inmates who have access to APP legal aid services, conduct move legal awareness sessions and extend into more prisons of our auxiliary paralegals. Our values show that restorative justice is at the heart of everything we do, and that we believe we can only achieve our mission by working with others with integrity. You can become a Changemaker too - follow us!
