Advitya Information

We are a not-for-profit organization that aims at empowering individuals with Intellectual disabilities in the city of Mumbai. At Advitya, people above the age of 18 years with conditions like Downs Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, varying levels of Epilepsy, Brain Damage and other forms of mental retardation are accepted as students. We have earned ourselves a reputation as being the ultimate sanctuary for adults with the above-stated conditions, usually in advanced stages of clinical depression, who have been rejected by other special education/vocation institutes and have no other place to engage themselves. These individuals suffer from aggression, violent behavior, disturbed emotional quotient, attention seeking disorders, depression induced loss of speech and physical movement, personalities fraught with anxiety and trauma among other problems. In most cases, the suffering is not limited to the student but vastly affects the family in social, economic and emotional ways. At Advitya, these students are admitted with a view to adopt vocation as a primary means of reducing and eventually terminating these disruptive conditions. Sports, outdoor and indoor recreational activities, therapies and counseling is also extensively used to further provide a permanent state of well-being for the students. Through vocation, the students are trained in adding value to handicrafts which provides them a lease to creative expression. Other activities include colour, music and animal-assisted therapy, dance, storytelling, puppetry, pottery, games, Do It Yourself sessions, cold cooking, art and craft, yoga, and meditation among many others. Currently, we are serving 30 such specially gifted students and their families and are striving each day to bring about degrees of positive behavior change among our beneficiaries.
