Scheduling a First Dentist Appointment: What age is best? The sooner you bring your child to the dentist, the more comfortable he or she will be. Dr. Herman likes to see babies right before the first birthday, or up to six months after the first tooth appears. This timing ensures that we can get to know your child and your child can get to know us. And we will be able to spot brewing conditions early such as incorrect teeth placement, gum problems or decay and this helps avoid costly and complicated problems later on. WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE FIRST DENTAL VISIT? We are experts in making your child's first dental visit as fun and lighthearted as possible. The office is super kid-friendly - we have TVs to entertain them and music to relax them. We will do just about anything to ensure your child feels safe and comfortable. If sunglasses or a stuffed animal is needed to get through the visit, we will gladly provide them. During the first dental visit we use our tell-show-do technique. This is when the teams explains in gentle terms everything we will do - before we do it. Dr. Herman will be looking for evidence of decay and will also inspect your child's gums and jaws to make sure everything is forming normally. Next comes teeth cleaning. Teeth cleaning is extra-fun at our office, too. Our famous prize box is a big favorite with the kids in Woodbury, Long Island. Your child will walk away with clean sparkling teeth, a gift from the prize box, flavored toothpaste and even a special toothbrush adorned with his or her favorite TV character.
