Actchem was developed jointly with Sastech, the R&D division of Sasol to solve the major abrasion problem in the Synthol Loops at Secunda. (see paper entitled Refractory and Process Developments in the Synthol Units at Sasol Secunda ) The development was based on low angle abrasion testing designed to simulate wear in the Synthol Loops, and not using the standard ASTM method. Life in service was 8 times better than the standard phosphate bonded abrasion resistant material historically used worldwide in FCCU units. Actchem is manufactured in South Africa by ACT Manufacturing, and 778 tonnes have been supplied since 1990. Actchem is manufactured under license in the USA by Premier Refractories, and in Europe by Dramicom.
