The Association for the Cooperative Advancement of Science and Education (ACASE) is an independent association of scientists and teachers working to bring creativity, depth, and enjoyment into educational programs and scientific endeavors. We believe that science depends on education and that education can be improved through science. In our quest for a productive and sustainable influence on the field of education, we focus on empowering teachers by fostering their professional competencies. Inspired by the work of Mauritz Johnson, we have identified essential elements of educational processes, and principles by which they can be effectively realized. Through application of these simple and powerful understandings, we present alternatives to destructive testing and grading practices and promote student-centered educational experiences. We offer new ways of understanding educational assessment and evaluation and provide systems for monitoring and supporting student attainment in all domains and all levels of education. Through our unique professional development opportunities, we envision building a network of educational agents of change dedicated to collaboration, community building, and a future of engaged and motivated students.
