The mission of the A PLUS Youth Program is to use sports as a vehicle to provide the educational resources and character development necessary for student-athletes to succeed in life. A PLUS accomplishes their mission by offering holistic youth development programming based on our pillars of Education, Mentoring, and Sports. Student-athletes that want to participate in competitive basketball are required to attend an hour and a half of academic tutoring before sports practice two to three times a week and participate in 139 hours of mentoring annually. In the 2013-14 year, A PLUS was able to serve 188 student-athletes from 5th grade to 12th grade. We aim to accept student-athletes that fit into our 25-50-25 diversity snapshot. 25% of student-athletes have low barriers; chosen from their leadership skills, doing well in school and strong family support. 50% of student-athletes have medium barriers; struggling in school, single-parent families, some financial need. The final 25% have high barriers; below our 2.5 GPA minimum, little to no family support and definite financial needs. Our student-athletes come from 43 different schools in the greater Seattle area and 84% from public schools. Student First | Athlete Second
