Good ideas and money can be found, but effective executional skills are rare. Execution is the key of success…and people are the key of execution. This may sound romantic, but it is not. It is rational and tuff. 8Five Limited investment decisions are generally considered on the basis of 3 main aspects: 1. Skills of the people involved, 2. Technical Process innovation, 3. Customer-driven ideas. While both VC and PE are in the business of buying low and selling high, they come at this challenge from fundamentally different directions. We consider private equity and venture capital as opposites. In private equity, you start with the numbers, and then you try to fit the people activities into the numbers. In venture capital, you start with people, and then you try to figure out what numbers you can make.In other words, private equity is usually about taking an existing company with existing products and existing cash flows, then restructuring that company to optimize its financial performance. The venture capital process is usually much messier. Often, you start with a ragtag guerilla outfit, with no obvious path forward. So, while PE usually starts with existing but under-optimized companies, VC often starts with crazy people. 8Five Limited operates in both directions. Before investing in any form and amount we literary "enter" in the business model and we try to provide a fresh perspective. Being independent operators, we are able to contribute honestly without constituting a threat to the management team. Rather than taking on a purely advisory role, we take responsibility and manage a business unit or project in our own right. We want to contribute to the target company growth working on the business practices before than working on the financials. 8Five Limited typically participates to the decisional process taking Board Positions and executive roles in the operations; any company has different needs and the approach is customizable.
