59, a Journey studio, conceives, directs, designs, and delivers ambitious, large-scale, story-driven artworks, stage shows, events and immersive experiences. We started out in theatrical design, specialising in the integration of animation and film into physical environments, working with the UK’s National Theatre on animation and projection design for productions such as Waves (2006) and War Horse (2007). More recently, we have continued to explore how the use of projection, animation, physical set design and lighting can create new forms of stagecraft, with projects including the Tony Award–winning Stranger Things: The First Shadow and the Metropolitan Opera’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. Today, our work spans many industries, mediums and scales. From the video design for the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, to the design of the V&A’s record-breaking David Bowie is exhibition, to the creation of 360-degree storytelling experiences for immersive venue Lightroom, London, which we co-founded in 2023. We also collaborate with architects to reimagine how theatricality can be woven into the built environment, with projects including the design of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion for Osaka World Expo 2025, in partnership with Foster + Partners. With over 20 years of experience, we have worked with many of the world’s leading cultural institutions including the V&A, the Guggenheim, the Smithsonian and the BBC, as well as global brands including Apple, Formula 1 and Netflix.
