1844 is a group of black male attorneys who practice primarily in New York's Biglaw firms and in-house legal departments. The name "1844" is a reference to the year that the first black person (Macon Bolling Allen) was admitted to practice law in America. The group focuses on developing meaningful relationships with each other and leveraging the power of those relationships to: (i) help each member develop both personally and professionally; and (ii) give back to the community. In addition to assisting each member with personal and professional success,1844 actively mentors and sponsors the next generation of minority lawyers by providing career advice and job referrals and also by helping them pass the bar exam. With respect to pipeline initiatives, 1844 is a proud sponsor of the Legal Outreach program and each year its members volunteer their time to mentor the program's middle school and high school students. 1844 has had a direct impact on the minority communities of Harlem, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx by putting on police encounter/civil rights workshops. 1844 has also formed its own venture capital fund and has invested in several minority-owned tech start ups and various other businesses.
