Retrain and Retain: A maths and English teacher training programme Information

Retrain and Retain is a new Education and Training Foundation programme that has been developed to financially and practically support FE providers by retraining teachers and trainers, whose jobs may otherwise be at risk, to become teachers of maths and English. By doing so, it aims to address several key issues currently facing FE providers; Teachers and trainers may be facing possible redundancy due to a number of local and national factors resulting in the loss of specialist skills and subject knowledge, there is a national shortage of suitably qualified teachers and trainers of maths and English within the FE sector and there is more pressure on FE providers to ensure learners have an appropriate qualification in maths and English. FE providers who meet the qualifying criteria, will receive financial and practical support to identify teaching staff who may be at risk of redundancy and help them retrain as teachers of English or maths to GCSE level or Functional Skills Level 2. Financial support, in the form of a bursary, is awarded in return for allowing qualifying teachers and trainers the time and resources to access appropriate training and support to enable them to teach maths or English. Participants on the course will receive: 10 days CPD to enhance their subject knowledge, enabling them to teach maths or English to GCSE level or Functional Skills Level 2. 10 hours mentoring support delivered by specialist consultants from a maths or English education background. Mentor training to allow them to support future participants on the programme thereby gaining an invaluable skill within a teaching and learning environment. Training and support that encourages the recognition and development of good practice around the industry professional standards.
