We help managers to participate more insightfully in the hidden, messy and informal dynamics of organization that they experience every day but which are rarely referred to in mainstream consultancy offerings, management books, and leadership development programmes. We do this by introducing new thinking into the conversations around their specific issues and challenges – supporting them through an appropriate mix of hands-on consultancy; informed facilitation; individual and team development; coaching, mentoring, and executive challenge; and themed talks to provoke shifts in management practice. We have also developed a number of sense-making frameworks, which help managers to bridge the gap between the underlying, real-world dynamics of organization and the felt need for 'tools and techniques' to facilitate their own ways of working. Our approach is informed by the principles set out in two books, written by Chris Rodgers: “The Wiggly World of Organization” (Routledge, 2021) and "Informal Coalitions" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006). These directly challenge management orthodoxy on the nature of organization and the implications of this for leadership practice. In taking complexity seriously, these rehabilitate power and politics as central aspects of organization and management practice. Not signs of dysfunction that ‘proper management’ will cure. Notions of the "wiggly world" of organization and the "muddling through" nature of real-world practice emphasize that the seemingly disjointed and fragmentary nature of managers' day-to-day experience is not a sign of dysfunction or substandard performance. It is the very essence of their role. And that participating in this process with purpose, courage, and skill is the very best that they – or anyone else - can do. Our description of management as muddling through was featured in an article in a 2014 issue of the Sunday Times.
