Founded in 1887, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public, historically Black university that is part of the State University System of Florida. U.S. News & World Report lists FAMU as the No.1 public HBCU in the nation and Forbes Magazine ranks the University as one of "America's Top Colleges." The Princeton Review named FAMU among its " Best Colleges: Region-by-Region" list. Latino Leaders Magazine named FAMU among the “Best Colleges and Universities for Latinos,” and SmartAsset, a New York-based financial technology company, ranked FAMU the No. 2 “Best Value College” in Florida. The University has graduated more than 75,000 alumni and enrolls nearly 10,000 students hailing from across the United States and more than 70 countries. The student body includes representatives from all ethnic, socio-economic, and religious backgrounds. The CollegeNet and Pay Scale Social Mobility Index (SMI) recognized FAMU for its commitment to providing citizens with pathways for social and economic mobility. FAMU’s main campus is spread over 422 acres atop one of the highest of Tallahassee’s seven hills. The University also has several satellite campuses, including a site in Orlando, where its College of Law is located, and sites for its pharmacy program in Miami, Jacksonville, and Tampa. The University’s newest satellite campus is in Brooksville and is dedicated to agricultural and natural resource research and training. FAMU offers more than 95 degree programs and has 14 schools and colleges, and a number of centers and institutes. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Home to more than 40 U.S. patents, the National Science Foundation ranks FAMU the No.1 HBCU for research and development. The University was recently classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in the category of " R2 Doctoral Universities- Higher Research Activity."
